Just outside of Balmorhea, Texas on the road to Fort Davis lies a spot in the road identified on maps as Toyahvale. I noticed an unusual fence with stuff hanging on it. Now in Texas we are used to folk hanging things on fences; mostly boots and all kinds of carcasses. But this fence was different so I pulled over for a closer look. A plaque identifies the fence as the "Thundering Hooves Memorial"; a tribute to horses making it down this road to their final destination in Mexico to be turned into leather, meat, and glue. While photographing the fence, the owner of the fence pulled out of her gate and told me the story of the fence - which was her story. For more information: https://thunderinghooves.com

'Liquor and Guns' ~ Uvalde Texas......Long a well known pit stop in Uvalde, Liquor and Guns has been around a long time. In fact, they did sell liquor and guns in the past, but that time is gone. They did keep the best part of the business though, which is the sign. I mean, you can't say "Liquor and Guns" without having some craziness run through your mind. But to many, L&G is a symbol of Texas freedom; sort of like "Come and Take It". We know liquor and guns generally don't mix well - but we don't like being told what we can and can't do. And if we want liquor and guns, but God, we'll have liquor and guns!
